The Commodity Economics course is a unique opportunity to develop skills enabling a future career in the sector and get practical insights into an exciting industry.

What is Commodity Economics?
   
Commodity Economics is a cross-disciplinary course open to 3rd-semester master’s students. The elective courses focus on equipping students with knowledge, skills, and competencies within commodity economics. The industries within commodity, like energy, metals, oil etc., are ever evolving and exciting and require a broad set of capabilities, which the course enables.
    
Recent topics like the energy crises and the war in Ukraine are recent events that have had big influences on many industries within commodity economics. Furthermore, societal issues like how to create sustainable energy for the future, food for people in the world, and a stable supply of commodities continuously influence the course and projects within this area. The course will capabilities to understand, analyse, discuss, and create new ideas and perspectives for the above and skills that are sought after by companies in the industry.

Course structure

The commodity economics course can be chosen as a full 30 ECTS course, or students can follow the 10 ECTS introductory course (see description below).

Commodity Economics (basic – 10 ECTS)

This module combines extensive theoretical and practical principles of commodity economics aiming to provide the student with a comprehensive set of abilities to deal with problems and projects within the context of the course.

The 10 ECTS module will primarily consist of traditional lecturing, where the students will gain the general knowledge and skills needed to work with projects and problems within commodity economics.

The exam will be either oral or written.

Commodity Economics (advanced– 20 ECTS)

The 10 ECTS module is a prerequisite for students to select the 20 ECTS advanced project module.

This module will build on the knowledge and skills acquired in the 10 ECTS module and how to apply the knowledge and skills in practice through a project. The ambition of the module is to enable the students to find a relevant research question within the field of commodity economics and create a project around the research question. In the project, the student will be expected to apply the theoretical knowledge from the 10 ECTS course as well as the ability to understand, analyse, discuss, conclude and create future perspectives on the chosen research question.

The exam will be oral based on the project.
