Interaction spaces in Art and technology

Project module

The module will be conducted as a series of experiments with interactive installations aimed at specific user groups or audiences in specific spatial contexts. This may be an urban place or stage, architectural setting, a community environment, an exhibition space, etc., where artistic installations are created and tested in relation to providing participant experiences of various kinds, which may be the orchestration of social relations, learning experiences, sensory and aesthetic experiences, action-reaction patterns, or similar. Various interactive technologies and embedded intelligence systems are investigated and applied in order to create the desired effects.

Art in Context II
5 ECTS
Written 7-day assignment

The module ”Art in Context II” examines media art works and their cultural, aesthetic, social, and technological positions in the 20th and 21st centuries. The module introduces the students to the academic and theoretical contexts of the fields of media theory and art and technology. Through different teaching formats such as lectures, workshops, study-trips, and seminars, the students will learn how to apply theories when analyzing media art works.

International Collaboration
5 ECTS
Active participation/written assignment

The module “International Collaboration” is a theoretical and practical introduction to methods of collaboration with international art institutions and/or art and design companies, and its possibilities and challenges. The students learn how to organize and implement an international collaborative project. The teaching format is a workshop. The project is supported by relevant literature and case studies that thematize and discuss central ideas such as globalization, networked culture, and collaborative creativity.

Narratives and interaction
20 ECTS
Project module

The main module of the semester introduces to the production and creation of narrative artefacts and narrative universes with special emphasis on the integration of interactive narratives and physical stages. The module is supported by theoretical and practical courses and seminars within concept development of narrative installations of various kinds, video editing, scripting, and possibly special ad hoc activities evolving from the production processes of the students. Furthermore, the module seeks to establish collaborative processes and projects with external partners and focuses on collaborative processes with other groups on a major project across the semester.

Mixed Reality Technologies
5 ECTS
Active participation/written assignment

This module introduces the students to theories and methods of mixed reality technologies in relation to the creation of interactive or re-active narratives and performances that merge virtual and material spaces. The module is comprised of theoretical and practical courses and seminars that concern use of technologies for construction of performative environments and/or installations.

Multimedia Programming
5 ECTS
Active participation/written assignment

The goal of this module is to strengthen the student’s capacity to develop advanced multimedia applications. Based on a significant amount of prior knowledge of programming, the module will advance the students capabilities to develop software and physical systems through more complex algorithms and programming techniques.

Applicants applying for exchange at Aalborg University must submit results of an IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge test with the below-mentioned minimum scores.

• IELTS (academic test). 6.5 overall band score
• TOEFL (internet-based): Minimum score: 85
• Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE): 180 / level C1
• Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): 180 / grade C
• ECPE: Passed test including certificate

The student must have knowledge and skills in basic programming concepts and object oriented programming in languages comparable to Processing, Java, P5.js, JavaScript, C# or comparable. Furthermore, the student ideally has some basic knowledge in electronics and physical computing e.g., Arduino or comparable.
