Separate module at Master´s level

AC- and DC Microgrids

An electrical microgrid can be defined as an independently operating network of energy-converting devices coupled with energy stores via power electronic components. These enable the generation of energy and storage near the energy consumer. The course provides examples of experience with existing microgrids and then the students will learn to model, simulate and operate networks in island mode.

An electrical microgrid can be defined as an independently operating network of energy-converting devices coupled with energy stores via power electronic components. These enable the generation of energy and storage near the energy consumer.

Such networks play an essential role in relation to renewable energy systems, such as photovoltaic and wind farms, where they can help ensure network stability and minimise energy losses.

The course provides examples of experience with existing microgrids and the students will learn to model, simulate and such networks that are operated in island mode. In addition, the focus is on how power electronics are integrated into the networks.

Relevant topics such as frequency and voltage drop control and virtual impedance are elaborated in detail. Hierarchical management of microgrids using Internet-Of-Things (IOT) and stabilization is also addressed.

Admission requirements and application

Course structure

The module is affiliated with the section for 'electrical systems and microgrids' at Aalborg University, Department of Energy, and will be offered by world-leading researchers and teachers in the field.

The course is assessed by internal oral examination.

It is expected that the module will partly be offered via physical teaching, but online or hybrid teaching will also be used to the extent relevant.
