MASTERPLAN FOR

Research and Innovation 2024-2026

In 2023, SRFI prepared a masterplan that sets the direction for digitalisation in the research area in the period 2024-2026. The masterplan is mainly based on the common digital services and support that are made available to our researchers.

MASTERPLAN FOR

Research and Innovation 2024-2026

In 2023, SRFI prepared a masterplan that sets the direction for digitalisation in the research area in the period 2024-2026. The masterplan is mainly based on the common digital services and support that are made available to our researchers.

AAU must continue to put digitalisation in the field of research and innovation high on the agenda, and digitalisation must support AAU's research strategic visions and be a significant driving force for the creation of new knowledge.

The research and innovation area is affected by technologies, deadlines for fund applications, and rapidly evolving digital trends. Therefore, it is important that such an area works agile and is able to prioritize and adapt within a short time.

In this way, we ensure that AAU can be in the vanguard of research and innovation.

CLAAUDIA service development
The need for digital support for research is becoming greater and greater, and the requirements are constantly changing in line with technological developments. Therefore, researchers must be supported with the right tools, support and advice within digital research infrastructure services. CLAAUDIA must therefore be able to provide the necessary and relevant services for researchers.

CLAAUDIA serves both common and local needs, and ensures the necessary digital support for challenge and mission projects at AAU. A strategic development plan is needed for CLAAUDIA to ensure focus on the correct digital support for AAU's researchers.

AAU must ensure strategic development that matches the current and future needs of the researchers, as well as ensure the necessary services and resources. There is a need for specific roadmaps to be prepared for the period 2024-2026 for services such as compute, HPC, AI, storage, support, etc.

AI
AAU ensures that researchers have access to new AI technologies so that they can maintain and develop their research strengths. Researchers at AAU must continue to be attractive partners with high AI competencies with access to modern AI technologies. To ensure world-class research, AAU must be able to offer researchers opportunities to adopt AI in all research areas, which can also form the basis for interdisciplinary research collaboration.

Due to outdated hardware, approximately 50% of AAU's current capacity will be phased out in the AI cloud. This leads to a sharp reduction in AI capacity. The consequences are that there are too few AI resources available to researchers. This is happening at the same time as demand is increasing sharply in all research areas. There is a need for AAU to prepare an action plan to ensure that AAU has the necessary AI capacity to support the researchers' work.

HPC
Over a number of years, AAU has built up research-dedicated HPC resources. There is a great need for access to these resources and the need will increase in the future. To ensure that researchers have access to the necessary resources, AAU should continuously develop and expand these HPC resources. If there are insufficient HPC resources, researchers can waste unnecessary research time waiting for available resources.

In recent years, a paradigm shift is taking place in research and science. The scope of digital data generated in all main scientific areas is growing, changing the opportunities and conditions for conducting research at the highest level. To fully exploit the opportunities offered by the development of data, a supportive digital infrastructure is required. A continuous development of HPC resources is necessary for this development to be exploited and translated into scientific breakthroughs .

If AAU does not continuously develop and maintain HPC resources, it will minimize AAU's ability to conduct relevant and groundbreaking research in many research domains, and is therefore an important competitive parameter.

Data Management
In relation to the implementation of the national DM/FAIR strategy at AAU, a series of activities have been initiated across faculties, such as awareness, competency development offerings, and assistance in the preparation of data management plans in collaboration between researchers and data stewards

Looking ahead to 2027, there is a need to implement process support as well as digital tools that support researchers’ work with data throughout the project lifecycle - from the idea phase, through execution, to project completion and publication. The work on implementing the national strategy for FAIR Data Management towards 2027 should ensure a local anchoring of good data management practices, and ensure that we build on the work that has already been initiated under the auspices of Knowledge for the World. We continue to want to be one of the universities that are at the forefront of implementing the national strategy

If the work on implementing the national strategy does not continue in the coming years, there will be a significant risk that the work with good data management practices and data compliance will not be implemented and organizationally anchored at the institutes. This will further end up having a negative influence on the researchers’ ability to secure external funding as well as to be coordinators on larger applications
